Missa confidentiae
Johann Joseph Fux, the most significant Austrian composer of the baroque era, was born in the vicinity of Graz around 1660. After his studies he became involved with sacred music at the court chapel in Graz. Later he moved to Vienna where he worked as organist at the Benedictine abbey (“Schottenstift”), as composer at the emperor’s court, as capellmeister at St. Stephan’s Cathedral and from 1715 onwards as musical director of the Imperial Court Music Ensemble. He also became known as the teacher of several prominent composers and as the author of educational books. Fux composed both instrumental and vocal works, even some operas, but his main focus was on sacred music. His compositions are characterized by artistic contrapuntal technique, expressive harmonies and melodic beauty. The Missa Confidentiae was written for a four part choir, soloists, two violins and basso continuo.
