SCENTED RUSHES - FRAGRANT NOTHINGNESS
Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality. - Lewis Carroll
Old and new. Formal rigour and freedom. Fantasy and logic. In ‘Scented Rushes’, the boundaries of several pairs of opposites and sound languages are playfully overcome as we immerse ourselves in fabulous fairytale worlds. Three friends of mankind, all of whom tell their own marvellous stories in their very own way, show us the way on this adventure: the composer and pianist Maurice Ravel (1875 - 1937), the mathematician and writer Lewis Carroll (1832 - 1898) and the composer and harpist Bernard Andrès (*1941).
Steinkogler and Butt do not see the combination of harp and accordion as a contradiction in terms, but rather as a pair of opposites, as a surprising, exciting combination through which previously unheard and unheard-of things are expressed and brought to life.
Because opposites mean vitality. There is no life without contrasts, friction, in short: without ambivalence. Life IS an oxymoron.
The focus of their arrangements is not imitation, but the creation of colour, friction and tension and the opening up of fresh perspectives on the familiar.
