Jacobus Gallus (1550-1591): Missa Pater noster
The "Missa da imitationem Pater noster" by Jacobus Gallus is a parody mass. In this genre, entire compositions for several voices or large parts of them were taken over for new compositions and provided with new texts. In this mass, Gallus uses his own motet "Pater noster", which he later published in his "Opus musicum", as a model. Different sections of the template appear in the individual movements of the mass, some more than once, artfully varied or unchanged and combined with free sections. The beginning of the motet is found at the beginning of several Mass movements, which also begin similarly.
With incredible diligence, as he himself wrote, "in nightly work", Gallus worked on the printing of his works. The "Missa Pater noster" appeared in 1580 in a collection of masses that he dedicated to his employer, the Bishop of Olomouc Stanislav Pavlovský, for whom he was employed as Kapellmeister at the time. The dedication is signed "Iacobus Hàndl, Gallus vocatus, Carnilanus". "Jacobus Gallus" is the Latinisation of his name Jakob Händl (also Handl), "Carnilanus" describes his origin from the Duchy of Carniola, which today lies in Slovenia.
He was extremely successful with his collection of masses and received the imperial printing privilege from Emperor Rudolf II.
