Antonio Salieri was active in many roles during his long career at the Viennese imperial court: he conducted the Italian opera and the court chapel; he wrote church music and created brilliant stage works; he managed a large ensemble, ran welfare organisations for families of musicians and founded a conservatory. He trained singers, taught Franz Schubert the basics of counterpoint and gave Beethoven the finishing touches in vocal composition. What a panorama - and yet he is often only thought of as the malicious antagonist of Mozart that only the 19th and 20th centuries turned him into. The contributions in this book correct this distorted image: they present Salieri's work as a composer, teacher and organiser in all its facets.
